Improvisation is a key feature of jazz, and so is children’s playfulness. That strikes a chord in HK’s most renown storyteller and poet Uncle Hung. So a program for children to create poetic narrative together with a jazz musician is conceived. In this program, Uncle Hung will be working with musician Ah Kok of Hidden Agenda, to explore with children their connection with the world and themselves through poetic narratives and jazz music, and their echoing with each other.

W02. The Drum Circle – Sharing Rhythm for Group Consciousness  [FULL]

A drum circle is any group of people playing hand-drums and percussion in a circle. They are distinct from a drumming group or troupe in that the drum circle is an end in itself rather than preparation for a performance. They can range in size from a handful of players to circles with thousands of participants. Typically, people gather to drum in drum "circles" with others from the surrounding community. The drum circle offers equality because there is no head or tail. It includes people of all ages. The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with each other and themselves. To form a group consciousness. To entrain and resonate. With the diversities rhythm support by the Aseana Percussions Unit, audience can participate in this workshop, learning the exotic rhythm from all over the world, and create their own collective voice, which emerges as they drum along.

W04. Body Music Language - An Improvisational Approach by Trio d’en bas [FULL]

The main lines developed with the participants are improvisation, rhythm and all musical approaches. That is what Trio d’en bas highlighted in its music and art. They work on personal expression, creativity and listening each other with games and improvisations. The participants use their body as a percussion, objects of the daily life can be used as musical instruments. The musicians of Trio d’en bas adapt the course according to the wishes of the participants.

The workshop starts with band playing a few popular songs and explains the structure and form to the audience. Then some small percussion instruments will be distributed to the audience, showing them how to play the rhythm and sing along with the band. And main goal is to show them the beauty of improvisation. As we believe children is the best story-teller, and the workshop will show them a way to restore the imagination and creativity inside their mind, which will be thinning out once they receive formal education and training. Tunes that will be featured in the workshop include some popular cartoon theme songs.

The workshop will demonstrate methods of expressing and revealing your pure and honest voice by singing a song or a free improvisation. Beside this the workshop will concentrate on the aspect of communication, with the band and the audience.

W09. A World of Music - Nguyên Lê’s Clinic [FULL]

As a Paris-born child of vietnamese immigrants, Nguyên Lê grew up in a cross-cultural situation. Fascinated by non-western cultures which are part of Paris today’s life. These influences are essential in Nguyên Lê’s style, and he will show how to integrate the lessons of those cultures in the playing and writing. Usually Nguyên Lê assumes that the students know already all the basics of jazz harmony and improvising. The idea of the clinic is to go beyond the basics, and show how the studying of traditional and non-western music can highly help to develop new and special ways of creating and thinking music. Covering topics like Modality; Vibratos; Quarter Tones; Polymodality and Odd meters etc.

Australian jazz fusion group “Logic” will discuss their approach to improvisation particularly in relation to their original compositions. The band will perform a selection of their songs and lead a discussion on the composition process, and how these compositions can be used as vehicles for improvisation. Audience questions are encouraged.

Rusconi Trio is said to be the future of jazz. Their music is harmonic and warm without appearing sterile. Their unique musical style seems to be the long overdue revitalization of nowadays Jazz scene. It’s a Sonic Youth Life is inspired by the music of Sonic Youth, one of the most influential indie rock bands. In this workshop, the trio will talk about how they can extract the essence from the originally content of Sonic Youth and turned them into their own successful repertoire, and even how to make an acoustic instrument sound like electronic.
